Why Isn’t Leather Measured in Square Meters?

Genuine leather is a natural material, and each hide varies in:

  • shape

  • size

  • usable area

Using fixed square meter measurements does not accurately reflect the real usable leather area.
This can lead to inconsistencies in pricing and material estimation during production.

For this reason, square feet (sqft) is used as the international standard unit in the leather and upholstery industry.

What Is Square Feet (sqft)?

Square feet (sqft) is the standard unit used to measure the area of a full leather hide worldwide.

  • 1 sqft ≈ 0.0929 m²

  • Each hide is measured individually using specialized machines

  • The exact area is marked on every hide

Typical Size of Upholstery Leather Hides:

  • 40 – 55 sqft per hide

  • Equivalent to approximately 3.7 – 5.1 m²

How Is Upholstery Leather Sold?

  • Leather is sold by full hide

  • Each hide has a specific sqft value

  • Pricing is based on the actual measured area of each hide

No two hides have exactly the same size.

What Is “Pia” in the Leather Industry?

Leather is widely used in furniture, fashion, and premium upholstery applications.
Beyond color, thickness, and finishing, understanding measurement units is essential for accurate material selection and cost estimation.

Internationally, leather is measured in square feet (SF).
However, in the Vietnamese market, this unit is commonly referred to as “Pia” for convenience.

Simply put:

  • Pia = Square Foot (SF)

  • It is not a different unit, just a localized industry term

Unit Conversion for Leather Measurement

  • 1 Pia = 1 SF (Square Foot)

  • 1 SF = 30.48 cm × 30.48 cm

  • 1 cm² ≈ 0.0010764 SF

  • 1 m² ≈ 10.76 SF

In Practice:

  • Buying & pricing → Pia / SF / sqft

  • Design & estimation → converted into m² or cm for easier visualization

Common Ways to Write Leather Area Units

In documents and quotations, square feet may appear in different formats:

  • sqf

  • sqft (most common)

  • sq.ft

  • ft² / ft2

  • pia

Regardless of format, all refer to the same unit: square feet.

Conclusion

Understanding how leather area is measured helps you:

  • Avoid pricing misunderstandings

  • Plan materials more accurately

  • Evaluate the true value of imported leather

In practice, square feet—or Pia—is the common language of the upholstery leather industry.
